My Diary

What made this country (USA) great is innovation, particularly in Science & Technology. People from various countries came to this country to nurture their mind for scientific discovery and finally settled because this country proved to provide that fertile environment. Since couple of years, that believe was slipping away. Now, there is a hope; check this site for President Obama promise, delivered in the National Science Academy on 27th April, 2009. Also check this paper.

This human migration took place since centuries. People migrated from their birth place to this country for better opportunity and made this new location as their Home. To know more about this amazine journey, see 'Genetic Anthropology, Cultures and Diseases';

Obeviously, this country did not come to this point in one day or in one year. It took centuries while going through the struggle and wars to bring this independence and democracy that we all are enjoying today. It took the strength in leadership and right mind of some great leaders to come to this point. One can have a very good history of this development by visiting the Library of Congress, a rich source of history of this country.

The Smithsonian Institution’s first state-of-the-art exhibition about genome science, Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code, opened Friday, June 14, 2013, at the National Museum of Natural History in partnership with the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), a part of the National Institutes of Health. See here for more.

The escalating cost of providing quality healthcare in this country has concerned us all. The congress has worked on a health reform bill H.R. 3590 to address this issue and finally enacted it into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010. While the public debate is going on the merits and demerits of some of the provisions introduced in this bill, the Republicans has vowed to repeal this Act in their next opportunity. See here for more recent news.

2009 A (H1N1) created a grave concern in 2009 among the experts in US and other countries. WHO issued a level 6 alert (the maximum in the scale). By then, more than 4000 people died. To know why this strain of H1N1 was considered seriously, one should understand the genetic characteristics of this new strain as compared to the seasonal Influenza A (H1N1); see this article in Science 'Antigenic and Genetic Characteristics of Swine-Origin 2009 A (H1N1) Influenza Viruses Circulating in Humans. Garten, et al., Science 325, 197-201 (2009)'. This author organized a panel in SC09 to discuss about this issue (see: Cyberinfrastructure in Healthcare Management. Arun K. Datta (moderator), Terry Boyd, Wilfred Li, Fang-Pang Lin, Stanley J. Watowich, Peter Arzberger. Proceedings in the SC09: The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis, Portland (OR), November 14 - 20, 2009)

Covid-19 that started as an endemic in Wuhan (China) in December 2019 quickly spread globally causing a pandemic affecting more than 200 countries. The causative agent is a coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2. As of today (October 18, 2021), it has already killed more than 700,000 people in the US and 4.5 million people worldwide critically affecting the Public Health Systems. WHO coined the term Covid-19 to distinguish this illness from other coronavirus respiratory diseases, such as, SARS (2003) or MERS (2012). Fortunately, vaccines are now available to prevent this deadly viral disease. For more, read this article published in SAIKAT's magazine (pages 45-49). Also, check here.

I am politically concious, but not activist. Born in the largest democratic country, India, and now living in the US since long, I am a strong believer in democracy. Democracy promotes freedom of thinking, freedom of legitimate expression, and nurtures innovative ideas. So, I became terrified when I witnessed an attempted coup on January 06, 2021 that was staged by some extremist by attacking the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. to keep defeated Donald Trump in 2020 presidential election in power. Luckily, that attempt was failed by couragious security personnel and ethical actions of majority members in the congress (see the report; also, see the summary here. I realized that democracy is not my birth right (I wish that for everybody) but need to practice and promote every day to preserve its sanctity.

Today (June 09, 2023) is an unprecedent day when the Federal Department of Justice has indicted the former President, Mr. Donald J. Trump, of violating the US Espionage Act among other violations (total 37 counts). Find out here the 49-page indictment presented to the country by Mr. Jack Smith, the Special Council who worked on this case.

I am a fan of Rabindranath Tagore's creations. In my mind, he is one of the best philosophers that I am familiar with. I read his publications, enjoy listening the songs, and view the films made on his novels, particularly by Satyajit Roy, one of the best Film Directors.

I was born in a Hindu Family and agree with its most philosophical ideas that developed from Vedic religion.

I also like to travel, an interest infused by my father when I was very young, and travelled several places with him in India. Traveling various parts of the world, I learnt a lot and gained considerable experience. See herefor more. Early in my life, I took lessons from local Padi on diving and explored beautiful marine life in California with my buddy.
